The Perfect Surprise Proposal Spots In and Around Austin Texas | Photography by Estefana

It’s proposal time!

Now that you’ve found “the one”, it’s time to plan on how to get on one knee!

So let’s think, where is this going to take place at? No worries! We’ve got your back!

If you’re in the Austin area, some of the best places to propose at are around the downtown locations along with a few other spots further away. Some locations require a little walking, and some do not. It just depends on what you envision for the perfect proposal spot!

So here’s our list of some areas in Austin/surrounding areas that would be an amazing location to begin your journey.

This is in no particular order, so be sure to do some research to make sure this is what you’re envisioning!

University of Texas Skyspace

Are you interested in a proposal dealing with the sky somehow? Here’s your place! UT offers this unique location in Austin. A reservation is needed ahead of time to visit but if you want professional photography done, you’ll need to contact them to reserve and pay a fee.

An excerpt from the location’s website tells more about this beautiful spot. Landmarks, the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin, is pleased to present The Color Inside, a Skyspace by artist James Turrell. All members of the campus community and public are welcome to visit. The optimal viewing times to experience Turrell’s art are at sunrise and sunset, during light sequences that last about an hour. The Skyspace offers a quiet, contemplative space during other times of the day.”

Zilker Botanical Garden

If you’re searching for a flowery type setting. Then this is your place! There are different sections inside of the garden, so there’s plenty of options to propose at if one spot doesn’t catch your eye.

Keep in mind, there is a photography fee of $50 if you plan on having a photographer present. To propose without a photographer, all you have to do is purchase your day pass to enter. I recommend purchasing your passes in advanced as they tend to sell out fairly quickly, especially on the weekends.

There are a few rules on where you can/can’t stand, especially with photography, but that’s really about it. This is a gorgeous & low key location. A definite less stressful way to propose!

Sekrit Theater

Sekrit Theater has the complete vibe of, “Keep Austin Weird” along with other neat spots to use. The most popular area to use is the glass greenhouse. It looks more like a vintage greenhouse with a few broken glass squares, and a couple of old chandeliers. This spot can be used multiple ways, but it can also be used for a surprise proposal! You can decorate the area or just go with the flow.

If this is a location you’d be interested in, you MUST book & pay in advance as the time slots go by fast. This location is a HUGE hot spot for photographers, so you know planning needs to be on top game to be here.

Decorating must be done by either you, or an outside party as the owner does not offer this service. And be sure to clean up afterwards! It’s greatly appreciated!

The Long Center

Wanting a whole lot of Austin in the background of your proposal photos? Then this is your spot!

It’s free to use, but there is a strong catch. PEOPLE! Yes, lots of people will be in the area. There’s even yoga classes & other events that take place here almost daily.

So if you decide to show up at random, be prepared to go with plan b because there are frequent events that tend to go on here.

If things do work out, you’ll get some great photos of the Austin skyline in the background.

Just be sure to check out the events that are going on in the area before you head down there. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a free day where not much is going on!

McKinney Falls State Park

Are you and your significant other a more outdoorsy type couple? Then check out this location!

The rock formation here is really unique, and you get some great waterfall photos if there’s enough water present. (Depending on if we’ve received enough rain.) If Austin hasn’t received much rain around the time of your scheduled visit, the area may be a bit dry and smelly, and the swimming area will be a bit low.

Oh! Did I mention you can swim here?

To enter the park, you must have a day pass for you and your significant other. If you decide to have a photographer present, they as well need a day pass to enter. It’s highly recommended to purchase your day passes in advance as they tend to sell fairly quickly as the day gets closer to your scheduled visit. Especially during the late summer/cooler months.

There are some people that roam around, but it’s a fairly big location, so you’d be able to get some privacy for your surprise proposal.

Seaholm District

Are you a die hard city folk? Then this is probably where you want to aim at for your upcoming surprise proposal!

You’ll definitely get a whole lot of downtown Austin when you get down to the Seaholm District area. There are so many different areas here that would be a great for a surprise proposal!

My absolute favorite spot is the butterfly bridge. Though, it is a working road, so you may not be able to do a full proposal here as you’d risk being run over. But you can do a proposal on the pedestrian sides of the bridge. There are also other areas that are great contenders for the big moment.

Since the Seaholm area is a really large location, I’d recommend taking a trip down there to lock in a plan ahead of time. Since it’s a public area, there will be LOTS of people everywhere, so be prepared for that. If that’s not your jam, then you may want to find a different location that’s more private.

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is a GORGEOUS location for a proposal, and the best part about it, it’s free! You don’t need to purchase any permits or day passes for this location.

Though, it’s always pretty crowded around sunset time, so be prepared to either have people be in the way, or attract some applause from a crowd. Aside from this, you do get a nice scenic view of Lake Travis, and all of the cool boats in the area.

It’s also a great place for a picnic if you’re wanting to relax and watch the sunset. It would definitely be really romantic!

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

If flowers are your thing, then head on over to the Wildflower Center! This location was named after President Johnson’s wife & Helen Hays. Then later renamed to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

This location primarily focuses on conservation of native plants and other environmental aspects. It’s a wonderful facility, and their intentions are extremely admirable.

If you’re into saving the planet, then this location may be the symbolic thing to add to your surprise proposal!

Now, to propose here, all you have to do is get a day pass for you and your significant other. If you’re wanting a photographer present, you will need to pay a fee. The photography fee averages between $100-$250 depending on the day you decide to schedule with them.

Another great attribute that the Wildflower Center gives, is an inside scoop on what’s blooming in the area. So if you’re wanting a specific flower to be in full bloom, check out there bloom page to see what’s going on before you head down there.

Overall, this is a great spot to propose at, and if you’re wanting professional photos taken here. Any and every spot makes for a great background. Trust me!

We hope this surprise proposal location guide leads you in the right direction!
