How to prepare for a surprise engagement

Tip #1: PREPARE

They say practice makes perfect, but honestly, just practicing can make your life easier!

If you’re not sure what you’re going to say when you get on one knee, practice! Maybe listen to your favorite song, or look back at some of your favorite photos of just the two of you. What comes to mind? Does it give you butterflies? Let your soulmate know how much you love them, and can’t wait to spend the rest of your life with them!

Tip #2: THE RING BOX

This may seem like a lame tip, but bare with me! I promise I have a good tip for you!

Make sure the ring box can actually come out of your pocket without you having to fight with your pants/shorts. I’ve seen this happen so many times where the guy/girl gets the ring box stuck in their pocket during the big moment. In fact, this happened to Sam!

He kept telling me to look away at this imaginary boat by the water. While I was searching for this boat, Sam was tackling with the Zales ring box in his pocket. (It was a huge cube-like box!) I turned around right when he almost got the box out, so I spoiled the surprise. Oops!

So if you have a large ring box, definitely try searching for a smaller one! There are plenty of cute options on Etsy. You’ll thank us later!

Tip #3: Clothing Choice

This is an important step! I hear this complaint A LOT during proposals. “Why didn’t you tell me to wear something different?”.

The last thing you want to hear is that your significant other is upset with their clothing choice, and then you have to wear that same outfit for their surprise proposal photos.

The best thing to do is, maybe have their best friend or relative take them out for a shopping day a few days before that way they have something new to wear for the big day.

Or if that doesn’t work, maybe ask them what their favorite outfit is then pack that with you secretly. Then on the day of, tell them to put it on and be ready for a fun day out! Or have their friend or relative suggest a fun outfit for the weekend. Then go from there!

Pro tip: Pack that spare outfit in the car and have them change afterward. That way they won’t know, and they’ll still have an outfit they’ll love for the rest of the photos!

Also, MAKEUP! While they’re not looking. Grab their favorite lipstick or mascara before you leave for the proposal. I’ve also heard this complaint before. “OMG! I don’t even have makeup on for photos!”. By packing a few things with you, it’ll give them time to freshen up and be ready.

Keep in mind, that this DOESN’T MEAN they need makeup for photos. This is just if you know they’ll want some for the proposal pictures.

Trust me, by planning ahead, your significant other won’t be upset with you when they find out they have to take pictures after the proposal!

Tip #4 Undergarments!

Undergarment choice is very important! I know what you’re thinking, WHY is that an issue? Let me explain.

Say your significant other is wearing an outfit that shows her bra. Maybe it’s not shown all of the time but sometimes it pops out. If this is the case, it WILL show in photos. If she’s really excited and throws her arms up in the air and her bra shows, that’s going to be a problem. I’ve had more clients complain about their undergarments showing in photos than I’d like to count. The best way to remedy this is by making sure she’s not showing anything before you leave home. If she’s the type not to care, then that’s not a problem! But if she does care, especially in photos. Then be sure to politely say, wear another bra that may not show as much. We do help to minimize this during photos but during the actual proposal. We will not stop the proposal just to tell her that her bra is showing.

Trust us. This will help all of us if you double-check!

Tip #5: Nails, Nails & Nails!

Another big complaint I hear the most is, “Why didn’t you tell me to get my nails done beforehand?”. This is tough since you don’t want to ruin the surprise, but there are two options I can give that would help not give away the big reveal.

The first thing is, to buy fake nails from a department store such as Walmart or a local grocery store. That way when it’s time for photos, just have your significant other pop them on really quick and they’re ready to go! This also helps if your significant other doesn’t like to get their nails done in the first place. If you’re not sure which nails to buy, have their friend or mother go shopping ahead of time for you so they can get that taken care of.

Another option is, to have them go out with their friends a few days before to have a mini spa day. There are also some local options that have the spa come to you! If your significant other wants to have a spa day at home, use my coupon code below to have a nail salon come to you! Depending on where you live, will depend on if they service your area or not.

Tip #6: Family/Friends

Having family/friends around during the proposal can go one of two ways. Exactly the way you planned, or the complete opposite.

Now, I’m definitely NOT saying family or friends shouldn’t be around for the big reveal. My main tip here is, they’ll either race in with excitement because the proposal JUST happened, or make comments to you like, “About dang time!” Then a possible argument happens. (I’ve seen this before) It just depends on your relationship with everyone, and how you envision the big moment.

Also, it’s possible family/friends will want to take up the whole time taking photos during our scheduled time with you. If this isn’t what you have in mind, be sure to let them know that you want to take photos with your significant other FIRST before you take photos with them. It’ll help loads letting them know ahead of time. Trust me!

Tip #7: BREATHE

When the time is right, take a few breaths, smile, and start the big moment. If you feel super nervous, just take a few deep breaths, and think about how your love will say, YES!!

Also, if you seem too nervous or shaky, they’ll figure out that you’re up to something. So don’t blow your cover!

Look towards your goal, imagine them walking down the aisle.

YOU GOT THIS!

Proposing can seem a bit scary, but once the moment starts. You’re going to be on cloud 9; laughing at how nervous you were, explaining why you were being so weird during the entire trip. It’ll all be worth the stress, and anxiety once your love says, YES!

Follow your heart, breathe, practice, and don’t forget to make sure the ring box goes in/out of your pocket!

This is going to be a great day, so be ready to celebrate!
